UNIQUE WORKS WITH MONOTYPES

In parallel with printmaking, Gérard Jan first engaged in the art of pastel, which he still practices, then in monotype, which has eclipsed printmaking for him. The artist draws on the copper with oily ink, then places a sheet of paper on his drawing and puts the copper and paper under a press.

The drawing is destroyed on the copper by printing on the paper. A single print preserves the artist's outline, while leaving him with surprises by the crushing of the ink and the chances of the imprint.

These works, whose appearance is by far comparable to black manners, are to be seen closely: the whole effect is based on tiny shades of gray, on marks in the paste that must be drawn quickly, before the ink has not dried. The printed monotype is numbered 1/1, which sums up its contradictory properties of print and unique work.
